I started college in my early 20’s. It was nothing like I prepared for, so I quietly stopped going. I didn’t have an adviser so I just thought I would stop going. That was mistake number 1. If you want to stop going to college, drop your courses. Do not stop going. It will bite you in the ass, twice. Not only when I decided to go back almost 10 years later, did I have to re-take those courses that I failed out of, I had to pay back my grant.
Now I am on academic probation for the 3rd or 4th year. I can’t sign up for courses with out have a plan signed by my adviser then it goes through the financial aid offices, they have to approve the plan in front of a comity, which then goes into a contract that I have agree to and sign. It always includes a paragraph on how I will make sure that I do what is being agreed to (keeping my grades above a C, ask for help when I need it, etc.).
I have been through 3 advisers since starting. The first one I had told me that what I wanted to do, as far as job/studies goes, would take me 8-10 years. I am well aware of that and didn’t see an issue with it, but he did. The next one was just dumb. I don’t see how she could even be an adviser, let alone a psych professor. She repeatedly ignored my emails or would say that she never received any from me at all. I would even send her the sent email a second and sometimes third time to prove that I did infact communicate with her. After many attempts to try and stick it out with her, I finally complained and got a new adviser. She has so far, been great. I have actually met her in person, unlike the second one.
You hear so many great stories that people have about their college years. Some of their best memories or even best friends they met or had in college. I have found that going to college the age that I am is not anything like this. I have not made but a few friends in college. I have found that I have not felt like I fit in at all. I am usually too old and have seen too much or been through too much to even begin to relate to the other students in my classes.
In college the teachers still make you partner up or get into groups. Horrible idea. It is just like high school, you have the one who knows what they are doing, the one who has no clue and doesn’t want to, and the one who knows what they are doing but would prefer to copy off of the one who knows what they are doing.
I was told once in psych class that I was over thinking or analyzing an assignment by fellow students. This proved my age and theirs as well. Really? Over thinking? In a psych class?
I keep telling myself, stick it out. Get these basic courses done so you can move on to the courses more geared toward your degree. But, damn, it’s hard. It’s hard going to the new type of college, where you can take a couple of courses per semester or can take them online. Did I miss out? Should I have gone to college straight out of high school and not done a damn thing with my degree? I mean, I wanted to go to school for horticulture in high school. I laugh at this now, what a dork, man.
Going to college as an adult is far different than any experience I have yet dealt with. I just want to shake them whipper snappers and tell them to live life before they go to college.
